Advocating for aggressive isolation and institutional quarantine, Chahal visited Mukund Nagar and Shastri Nagar within Dharavi, who represents the largest number of cases in the area, and spoke with residents. Chahal asked police personnel to strictly implement the closure. Dharavi’s first case was reported on April 1 by Mukund Nagar, who has since been sealed.
On Saturday, the newly appointed municipal commissioner also visited Nair Hospital in Central Mumbai, Covid-19’s largest facility. Chahal, putting on a PPE suit, met with Covid-19 patients admitted to the hospital and asked about the visit to the doctor, food and medicine, among others. He asked doctors, nurses, and other staff to raise any issues that need to be addressed.
At the epicenter of the pandemic, the city has so far reported 12,142 cases and 462 deaths. Prime Minister Uddhav Thackeray transferred Praveen Pardeshi on Friday as additional chief secretary of the Urban Development department. Chahal, who was the secretary of Urban Development, succeeded Pardeshi as the new civic chief of Mumbai.
On Saturday, former Managing Director of the Mumbai Metro Rail Corporation, Ashwini Bhide, and former Thane Civic Commissioner, Sanjeev Jaiswal, also took over as the two additional new City Commissioners who replace Jaishree Bhoj and Abbasaheb Jarhad, who were also transferred by Thackeray on Friday.
