MUMBAI: The Dharavi area of the city on Sunday saw the sharpest one-day increase in the number of Covid-19 positive patients with 95 new cases reported. These cases also included two deaths. The total number of positive cases in the area is now 590, which includes 20 deaths.
The maximum number of 95 patients were seen from areas such as the Matunga Forced Labor Camp, 90ft Road, Indira Nagar, Muslim Nagar, Valmiki Nagar, Dharavi Cross Road, Sanjay Nagar and Nursing Chawl. Meanwhile, the two deceased were identified as 54-year-old and 85-year-old 90-foot road in Dharavi.
Civic officials said many of the new patients reported Sunday had already been quarantined. A senior BMC official said these patients were screened through the dispensaries in the area that have now been started and had shown symptoms of fever, cold and cough because they had already been quarantined. Depending on whether they are symptomatic or asymptomatic, they should now be transferred to patient care centers.
For Covid-19 cases leaving the Dharavi area, the BMC has established quarantine facilities such as the 300-bed facility at the Rajiv Gandhi District Sports Complex, another 700-bed isolation facility at the transit camp school Dharavi and has also acquired 130 rooms in 11 Lodges in the locality. In addition, four private hospitals, Sai Hospital, Life Care Hospital and Aayush Hospital in Dharavi and Family Care Hospital in Mahim, have been acquired for it. “Therefore, we are testing only those who show symptoms or have been referred by local clinics. Furthermore, in the case of high-risk contacts as well, steps are being taken to ensure they are quarantined to stop any spread in the event of having contracted the virus, “said another civic official.
