Mumbai City Center Fire: Adjoining Building Evacuated, Firefighter Injured | Mumbai News

MUMBAI: A large fire broke out at the City Center shopping mall in central Mumbai on Thursday night and was not under control until Friday morning. The fire had spread to the second and third floors of the mall.
Fire officials declared their fire call from the brigade and deployed around 250 firefighters and 24 fire trucks in the firefighting operation. They closed the street outside the shopping center due to traffic. Firefighters evacuated about 3,500 people from the adjoining 55-story building, Orchid Tower, for their safety.

The smoke from the fire generated panic among the locals. A firefighter was injured during the firefighting operation and was taken to a hospital.

The fire started in a store on the second floor of the mall around 9 p.m. Thursday. Everyone in the mall evacuated safely. Samajwadi Party corporate and MLA Rais Shaikh, who lives in the building with his family, stated that both structures are on the same lot, the front is the City Center shopping mall and the rear is the Orchid building.

Shaikh said: “The smoke from the fire caused panic among the locals. Few of the residents of the building left their home for safety after noticing smoke from the fire on Thursday night. Earlier, a fire also occurred in the mall. It has many mobile accessory stores that can create problems during the fire, I even complained, but no safety measures were implemented. ”
The fire spread to another floor after midnight and firefighters decided to evacuate and move all Orchid Tower residents to nearby open ground.
An eyewitness, Mustafa Kapadia, said Thursday night: “There are many mobile accessories stores in the mall, we heard the sound of batteries exploding. As it was closing time, there were fewer people inside the mall. They came out safely after noticing the fire. ”
Local BMC district officials stated that the fire started in a store on the second floor, but the store was difficult to reach due to thick smoke from the fire. Firefighters managed to open the windows of the mall to release the smoke and gain access to the second floor.
