Muhurat Trade: Sensex Jumps 195 Points to Close at 43,638; Nifty is set at 12,771


NEW DELHI: Markets held a one-hour special Muhurat Trade session on Diwali (Saturday) to mark the beginning of Samvat 2077. The Hindu calendar year begins on Diwali and the Muhurat trade is believed to bring prosperity and wealth throughout the year.
The benchmark BSE sensex index jumped 195 points or 0.45 percent to hit a record close of 43.638 and similarly the broader NSE Nifty closed 51 points or 0.40 percent higher at 12.771. Sensex rose more than 350 points to hit an all-time high of 43,831 in the opening session; while Nifty traded above the 12,800 mark for the first time.
The top winners in EEB’s package were Bajaj Finserv, Tata Steel, IndusInd Bank, Bharti Airtel, L&T and ITC, with their shares increasing as much as 2.01 percent. On the NSE platform, all sub-indices started trading green with Nifty PSU Bank and Bank up 1%.
Brokers said buying activity picked up momentum when investors opened their books in the first session of Samvat 2077.
Both indices closed the Hindu calendar year Samvat 2076 with smart gains. The 30-share BSE package was up 4,385 points or 11.22%, while the Nifty index had soared 1,136 points or 9.80%.

Investors and traders perform rituals to honor account books and cash chests. Before the trading session, investors and brokers perform ‘Chopda Poojan’ to seek the blessings of Laxmi and Ganesh.
Trading hours change every year, depending on the right time of day. The business community has followed this tradition for more than half a century. Since 1957, the BSE has held this special business session and the NSE has followed it since 1992.
“Muhurat trading is the auspicious stock trading for one hour on Diwali (Deepawali) … As Diwali also marks the beginning of the New Year, it is believed that Muhurat trading on this day brings wealth and prosperity throughout the year” . according to the NSE.
Both stock exchanges will be closed on November 16 (Monday) for Diwali Balipratipada.
