NEW DELHI: With Prime Minister Modi leading the government counteroffensive from the front lines and dismissing the opposition’s accusation that soon-to-be enacted agricultural sector laws will lead to the dismantling of the MSP regime, the Center will announce a higher MSP for the rabbi (winter sown) crops next week.

The announcement will come almost a month earlier than is normally done and fits with the government’s plan to give the opposition no quarter on the issue. The aggression was on display once again with Modi celebrating the passage of the two bills in Rajya Sabha as a “watershed moment” and reassuring farmers about the continuation of the minimum price support purchase mechanism.

Refuting the opposition’s accusations, the prime minister reiterated that the MSP will also continue in the future. “I said it before and I say it once again: the MSP system will remain. The Ministry of Agriculture generally announces a new MSP for rabi crops such as wheat, mustard, and legumes at the beginning of the planting season after mid-October, but an announcement early this year may be an attempt to mitigate the attack by the opposition and show the government’s sincerity in the matter.

The announcement can also give farmers a signal in advance about the choice of crops they can choose to plant during the winter.
