MI vs CSK: FULL SCORE CARD
The victory made Dhoni the first IPL captain to record 100 victories.
CSK had been on a five-game losing streak against Mumbai, but after winning the match on Saturday, the Dhoni-led franchise finally managed a victory over the defending champions led by Rohit Sharma.
Dhoni returned to the cricket field after 437 days, as he last played a match during the 2019 World Cup, against New Zealand in the semifinals of the main 50-year-old tournament in July last year.
The former captain of India had announced his retirement from international cricket on August 15 this year.
“We can practice enough, but when you go to the field, you need to assess the conditions and do your best. It took us time, for the bowlers to find the right length in this field. Many positives but still many areas for let’s improve, “Dhoni said after the win.
“In the second half, there is a bit of movement for the players until the dew falls. If you don’t lose ground early, you have the advantage. These are the learnings,” he added.
Dhoni, however, faced only two balls during his team’s successful chase and remained undefeated at zero. The wicketkeeper-batter got thrown off the first ball he faced, but opted for a review (DRS), which saved him.
The replays clearly demonstrated that Dhoni had not sent the ball to Jasprit Bumrah’s bowling alley goalkeeper and as a result the referee had to override his decision.
While chasing 163 against the defending champs, Dhoni promoted Ravindra Jadeja and Sam Curran ahead of him. England’s all-rounder Curran made an 18-run cameo with just 6 balls to put CSK in a comfortable position.
In the end, Faf du Plessis and Dhoni led CSK to a five-wicket victory. For CSK, Ambati Rayudu played a 71 stroke to win the match, while Du Plessis scored an undefeated 58.
CSK will face the Rajasthan Royals on September 22, while Mumbai will face Kolkata Knight Riders on September 23.
