MPs to undergo coronavirus tests 72 hours before parliament session: Lok Sabha chairman

MPs to be tested for COVID-19 72 hours before parliament session: Lok Sabha Speaker

The monsoon parliament session is likely to begin on September 14 and conclude on October 1

New Delhi:

Members of Parliament will be asked to get tested for COVID-19 at least 72 hours before the start of the monsoon parliament session, Lok Sabha Chairman Om Birla said today.

The Monsoon Session is likely to begin on September 14 and conclude on October 1.

In addition to parliamentarians, all those expected to enter the premises of Parliament, including officials from ministries, representatives of the media, and staff from the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha secretariats, will be tested for the coronavirus before the start of the session, said Om Birla.

The Lok Sabha spokesperson had a lengthy meeting today with officials from the Ministry of Health, ICMR, AIIMS, DRDO and the Delhi government to finalize arrangements for the session in light of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Birla said that arrangements have also been made for hands-off security checks during the session.

If random testing for COVID-19 is required, it can be done during the session, he said.

Sources have told the Press Trust of India news agency that the Monsoon Session is likely to take place in two shifts: morning and afternoon.

Due to the pandemic, this will be somewhat of a one-of-a-kind session with several modifications.
