New Delhi:
Amaravati independent MP Navneet Kaur Rana has alleged that Shiv Sena’s Arvind Sawant threatened her in the lobby of Lok Sabha, warning her of imprisonment for speaking in the House against the Maharashtra government. In what could be a more serious charge, he also informed spokesman Om Birla of receiving acid attack threats via phone calls and on letterheads from Shiv Sena. The Sindhudurg member, however, has denied the allegations, saying instead that he would “support” the female member if someone threatens her with bodily harm.
In a letter dated March 22, Ms Rana said: “Today, the way Shiv Sena MP Arvind Sawant has threatened me is an insult not only to me but to all women in the country. therefore, I seek the strictest police action against Arvind Sawant. “
Her letter says that Mr. Sawant was angry that she raised the issue of issues in the Maharashtra government. According to her, she said: “I will see how you wander around Maharashtra” and “We will also put you behind bars.”
“I went blank at that moment (in the Lok Sabha lobby) and immediately turned back, one of my colleagues was there, and I just asked him, ‘Did you hear?’ He said, ‘Yes, I heard it, Navneet,’ “the MP told NDTV when recounting the incident inside the Lok Sabha. She told ANI that Bharat Margani, the deputy from Rajamundhry, had witnessed the incident.
“I have also complained before to the police and to Om Birla Hee about all the unwanted letters I received in the name of Shiv Sena. I got calls saying ‘The beautiful face you’re proud of, we’ll put acid on it so you can’t go anywhere … if you talk about Uddhav Thackeray Hee‘”he said, reiterating some of his accusations against the Thackeray government.
At the Lok Sabha, Ms Rana had raised the issue of suspended Maharashtra police officer Sachin Vaze, now arrested for his alleged involvement in the Mukesh Ambani bomb threat case and being investigated for the related death of Thane Mansukh’s businessman Hiran. He had also demanded that the Maharashtra government headed by Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray resign following allegations of corruption by former Mumbai Police Commissioner Param Bir Singh.
However, Sawant dismissed her claims as “outright lies” and instead accused her of being disrespectful and rude while speaking in Parliament. In any case, he said, Ms. Rana is the one who continues to threaten everyone.
“I have never threatened anyone in my life … Doing that to a woman is out of the question,” he asked in a video message in response to his accusation. “The House forbids naming anyone from outside … but she does it and it is noted. Some people are skilled at twisting things and gaining publicity.”
Sawant also questioned his “aggressive body language” while speaking about Thackeray. Ms. Rana responded, saying, “I will not take orders from Shiv Sena or Mr. Sawant about what body language to have and what to say.”
She said she was angry that Anandrao Adsu, Shiv Sena’s 2019 defeated candidate for Amaravati, had filed a case against him for his caste certificate.
Referring to the alleged acid attack threats against him, he said: “I condemn anyone who indulges in such acts (acid attack). If anyone tries, I will stand by Navneet Rana.”
