PATNA: Several “muscle men” from various parties, including the jailed Anant Singh, who opposed the Bihar Assembly elections, as well as his wives and children instead, are leading in their respective constituencies in the tally of Tuesday’s votes.
Anant Singh, a friend-turned-foe of Prime Minister Nitish Kumar, is running from Patna’s Mokama as Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) candidate and leads by more than 16,000 votes against his rival Rajeev Lochan Narayan Singh of Janata Dal (United).
Housed in Patna’s Beur jail in a case under the strict Illegal Activity Activities (Prevention), he also won the 2015 Assembly elections as an independent candidate from inside the jail after Nitish’s JD (U) Kumar will deny him a ticket.
Known as “Chote Sarkar” and facing 37 cases, Singh also beat Mokama in 2005 and 2010 as a JD (U) candidate.
Rit Lal Ray of RJD, who was released from jail earlier this year, was also leading from Patna’s Danapur assembly constituency by a margin of more than 20,000 votes against the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Asha Devi. Another muscular man from RJD, Prabhunath Singh’s son Randhir Kumar Singh, who opposed from the Chapra assembly constituency, was also leading against BJP’s Dr. CN Gupta by more than 2,400 votes.
Prabhunath Singh is currently serving a life sentence in a murder case.
Meanwhile, Narendra Kumar Pandey, aka Sunil Pandey, who ran as an independent candidate from the Tarari Assembly constituency in Bhojpur, leads by a margin of more than 700 votes, over the MLA Sudama Prasad of the Communist Party of India- Marxist-Leninist (Liberation). .
