State Minister for Railways Suresh Angadi passed away on Wednesday at the Indian Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in New Delhi. Angadi was in treatment for Covid-19. He was 65 years old.
Angadi had tested positive for the new coronavirus on September 11 before the start of the monsoon session of parliament.
The BJP leader passed away around 8 p.m. at the AIIMS trauma center, which has been converted into a dedicated COVID-19 facility, hospital sources told PTI. He is the Prime Minister of the Union who has died of coronavirus. At least six MLA and three MPs have previously succumbed.
Angadi was a four-time BJP deputy from Belagavi elected to Lok Sabha in 2004, 2009, 2014 and 2019. His political journey began when he joined the Bharatiya Janata Party in 1996 from the Belagavi district in northern Karnataka.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi and President Ram Nath Kovind expressed their condolences on Angadi’s passing.

“Shocked to learn of the passing of Shri Suresh Angadi, Minister of State for Union Railways. A kind leader, Shri Angadi, worked tirelessly for the people of his constituency, Belagavi and Karnataka. With his indomitable spirit, he carried out public service with humility and perseverance. My thoughts and prayers are with his family and loved ones, ”President Kovind tweeted.
Karnataka leaders, including former Prime Minister HD Devegowda, also condemned his death. “I am shocked and deeply saddened by the death of the Minister of State for Railways of the Union and a four-term deputy of Belagavi Shri. Suresh Angadi. He was like a little brother to me. I feel terrible losing it. This is an unbearable loss for our nation. May his soul rest in peace. May God give his family and supporters the strength to endure this pain. ”Gowda said.
At least nine Union ministers have tested positive for Covid-19, including the Minister of the Interior, Amit Shah, and the Minister of Roads and Transport, Nitin Gadkari.
