NEW DELHI: The Health Ministry said Thursday that it had secured the delivery of 36,433 ventilators to the country’s government hospitals and that the average cost now ranges from Rs 2 to 10 lakhs as the national industry began manufacturing the equipment.
The ministry stressed that all public health facilities in the country had only around 16,000 ventilators from independence to pre-Covid times.
But in less than 12 months, 36,433 ‘Make in India’ ventilators have been supplied to all public health facilities, it said in a statement.
All restrictions on the export of fans have been removed and “made in India” fans are being exported. The year saw great achievements in the medical supply sector in the country, the ministry said.
“At the beginning of the pandemic, India was almost totally dependent on imported ventilators, PPE equipment and N-95 masks,” he said. “In fact, there were no standard specifications for these products that are essential in the fight against the pandemic.”
The central government recognized the challenges posed by the pandemic in the early stages and successfully ensured more than adequate availability and supplies of essential medical items throughout the country, according to the ministry.
In the case of personal protective equipment (PPE), India became the second largest manufacturer in the world in March with a miniscule domestic production capacity. There is a production capacity of more than 10 lakh of PPE coveralls per day and it is also exported to various countries, the ministry said.
There are already almost 1,700 indigenous manufacturers and suppliers registered in the government electronic market, and dozens are already certified by the Indian Bureau of Standards.
PPE kits of nearly 1.7 crore lakh have been distributed free of charge to states, Union territories and central institutions.
“The reserve stock of personal protective equipment available with the central and state governments has increased from about 2 lakh in March to over 89 lakh today. The average price has dropped substantially from almost Rs 600 to about Rs 200 per kit. in 9 months, “the ministry said.
There were only three suppliers of N-95 masks with a production capacity of less than 1 lakh of masks per day. Now, more than 3,000 manufacturers and suppliers, including 1,509 BIS certified, of N-95 masks are already registered on the government portal and the domestic production capacity has increased to more than 8 lakh per day, he said.
These are also exported from India in large quantities. So far, more than 4 crore of N-95 masks have been distributed free of charge to various states, Union territories and central institutions.
The reserve stock of N-95 masks available with the central and state governments has increased dramatically from about 9 lakh in March to about 1.46 crore today and average prices have fallen from about Rs 40 to Rs 12 per mask during the same period. declared the ministry.
The government has already placed orders for the acquisition of almost 83 million syringes. In addition, offers have also been called for almost 35 crore of syringes. These will be used for vaccination against Covid and also for the universal immunization program.
