New York, April 25

The cases of New York City residents who contacted health authorities about possible exposure to common household cleaning products increased after a controversial comment by United States President Donald Trump, which suggested injecting disinfectants into the human body as a coronavirus treatment.

In the 18 hours after the comment, the Poison Control Center, a sub-agency of the city’s Department of Health, handled a total of 30 cases of possible exposure to disinfectants, the New York Daily News reported Friday, citing a spokesman.

None of those who contacted the center died or required hospitalization.

Of these 30 cases, nine were related to possible exposure to lysol, 10 were related to possible exposure to bleach, and 11 were associated with general household cleaning products, according to the spokesperson.

Compared to these cases, the figures were nearly half for the same 18-hour period last year, according to the report.

After a scientist made a presentation at the Coronavirus Task Force daily briefing on Thursday showing that the COVID-19 virus is killed by sunlight in two minutes, Trump suggested bringing powerful light into the body.

It made it even worse by suggesting injections of cleaners like bleach and isopropyl alcohol because Bill Bryan, the head of the Department of Homeland Security’s Technology Directorate said that bleach cleared the virus in five minutes and alcohol in 30 seconds.

Trump wondered if the cleaner “gets into the lungs and does a large number in the lungs.”

Facing criticism for his dangerous suggestion, Trump said he was only being “sarcastic” in making the comment. — IANS
