In an effort to increase the ease of doing business and take a step closer to digital India, the Union Cabinet today approved the proposal to establish public Wi-Fi networks across the country. This public Wi-Fi access network interface will be known as PM-WANI. The cabinet said the measure is expected to be more business-friendly and in line with efforts to facilitate business activity. In addition, he said that the Covid-19 pandemic has required the delivery of stable and high-speed broadband Internet services to an increasing number of subscribers in the country, including areas that do not have 4G mobile coverage, which can be achieved through the deployment of public Wi-Fi.

It is believed that the proliferation of public Wi-Fi networks will not only create jobs, but also improve disposable income in the hands of small and medium-sized entrepreneurs and boost the country’s GDP. The government has not set any license fees to provide broadband Internet services using public Wi-Fi access points, which is expected to encourage its proliferation and penetration throughout the country.

While the Public Data Office (PDO) will establish, maintain, and operate only WANI compliant Wi-Fi access points and provide broadband services to subscribers, the Public Data Office Aggregator (PDOA) will be a PDO aggregator. and will perform the functions related to the authorization. and accounting. In addition, the application provider will develop an application to register users and discover WANI compatible Wi-Fi access points in the nearby area and display the same within the application to access the Internet service.

While no registration will be required for PDOs, PDOAs and application providers will register with DoT through an online registration portal, without paying any registration fees. The government said that registration will be granted within 7 days of the request.

Meanwhile, the government is also working on the BharatNet program which aims to provide a minimum 100 Mbit / s broadband connectivity to all 2.5 lakh-gram panchayats in the country. This covers almost 6.25 lakh villages, to improve telecommunications in India and reach the goal of the Digital India campaign.
