Aizawl, Mizoram:
A 66-year-old coronavirus patient died today in Mizoram as the northeastern state recorded its first death related to the highly contagious virus, which has affected nearly 80 lakh people in India so far. While the country has reported more than 1.2 lakh of Covid-related deaths, Mizoram, which has reported more than 2,600 cases, has not seen any deaths so far.
The state’s first death comes amid a seven-day total lockdown in the capital city of Aizawl, which began Tuesday, to control the spread of the infection.
A tweet posted by Mizoram’s Public Relations and Information Directorate read: “The first Covid-19 related mortality in Mizoram is a huge shock to the entire state. I was 62 years old with existing comorbidities and was under treatment at ZMC for more than 10 days “. He then tweeted to correct the age of the patient.
The age of the deceased COVID-19 patient was erroneously reported as 62 years. However, it is clarified that his age is 66 years. The mistake is regretted.

In Aizawal, health officials said the man, who was suffering from various ailments, was admitted to the Zoram Medical College and Hospital (ZMCH) early last week after testing positive for Covid-19.
As of Wednesday morning, Mizoram registered 2,607 positive cases; however, 2,233 patients have been recovered and there are 374 active cases. Of the total cases, including 563 female patients, 1,747 people were from the Aizawl district alone.
With an increase in Covid-19 cases, a full week-long lockdown was imposed on the Aizawl Municipal Council area from Tuesday to control the spread of the disease in the state capital.
The official said at least 34 people, including two babies, have tested positive for Covid-19 since Monday in the Aizawl, Mamit, Siaha and Lawngtlai districts with 30 new cases in Aizawl alone.
All educational institutions, religious sites, OPD hospitals and stores, except those that sell basic goods, will be closed until November 3.
On Monday, the state government launched a “Fortnight of No Tolerance,” following an emergency meeting with health officials, churches and NGOs. The “Fortnight of No Tolerance” in the rest of the state involves a series of measures, including awareness-raising activities, restricting the movement of people, and regulating traffic in an attempt to “break the chain of transmission.” Violators will be fined, authorities said.
