When I first saw Amazon Prime Video’s Mirzapur series two years ago, I found it extremely kitsch in its approach to storytelling, but as the show gained popularity, I wondered if I had probably misjudged the series. Watching the first two episodes of the second season made me think of all the elements that made the previous installment a success: loudmouth characters, excessive violence, profanity, and it seems that this time Mirzapur has also stuck to his roots.
Season 2 opens a few days after the events of season 1. Revenge is on everyone’s mind, and there’s a great mix of who wants to kill whom. However, if you’ve followed the plot closely, you’ll be up to speed in a matter of minutes. The common ground that all the characters share, in addition to seeking revenge, is control of Mirzapur. While the first season lacked a hero figure, it appears that position will be filled by Shweta Tripathi Sharma’s Golu and Ali Fazal’s Guddu this time around.
The second season takes a while to gain momentum. Unlike the first season, there is no room for humor or even a hint of relief for viewers, making the episode viewing experience a bit grueling. The only time when there is any sense of calm is during the many conversations between Kaleen Bhaiya from Pankaj Tripathi and Munna from Divyenndu Sharmaa. Kaleen, who is a gift, behaves like a normal disappointed parent who is fully aware that his son is not really ready to take on the responsibilities that await him.
Programs like Mirzapur have a unique quality. They don’t require your full attention. Due to the lack of any kind of subtext, each emotion is explained. This makes them fairly easy to see around the home, as they don’t require you to completely disconnect from your surroundings.
When it comes to performances, Mirzapur has a strong cast that continues to deliver this time around as well. Shweta Tripathi Sharma stands out as the wounded woman whose determination is reflected even in her posture. Anjum Sharma’s Sharad looks promising too.
Mirzapur promoted Heartland content on the web space and with the series’ second season now streaming online, it seems this genre of content is here to stay.
