Surat: demanding a passage back to their home states, the agitated migrant workers took to the streets and clashed with police in the village of Mora in the Surat district of Gujarat on Saturday (May 9). The incident took place in the village of Mora, near the industrial city of Hazira. An official said protesting workers demanded that the district administration organize their trip back to their home villages in Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Odisha, among others.
Most of these workers worked in industrial units in Hazira and lived in the village of Mora, the official said, adding that the police had cordoned off the area and tightened security there.
According to a police official, more than 50 workers were detained for violating blockade rules, assaulting police personnel and disrupting the situation of law and order in the city.
A team from the State Reserve Police has been deployed to the area to monitor the situation.
