- MI decided to send Kieron Pollard, Hardik Pandya and Rohit Sharma in the Super Over
- MI managed just 7 runs for 1 wicket which Virat Kohli and AB de Villiers of RCB easily chased after
- It was IM’s first loss in a Super Over after winning the previous two in 2017 and 2019.
Former England captain Kevin Pietersen and former India captain Sunil Gavaskar criticized the Mumbai Indians’ tactics in the Super Over against Royal Challengers Bangalore in match 10 of the 2020 Indian Premier League (IPL) on Monday night .
The duo were unhappy with IM’s decision to send Hardik Pandya at bat alongside Kieron Pollard in the Super Over in place of Ishan Kishan, who broke 99 of 58 balls to help his team tie the game at 201 for 5 in his assigned 20 overs. .
The trio of Pollard, Pandya and Rohit Sharma managed just 7 runs in the Super Over launched by Navdeep Saini. RCB captain Virat Kohli and AB de Villiers comfortably checked the target without missing a wicket. It was IM’s first loss in a Super Over after winning the previous two in 2017 (vs Gujarat Lions) and 2019 (Sunrisers Hyderabad).
After the game, Rohit was asked why Ishan Kishan was not sent to bat in the Super Over to which he responded by saying that the southpaw was completely exhausted after his hit.
“He (Kishan) was exhausted and not comfortable. We thought we could send him in, but he didn’t feel fresh. Hardik is someone we trust to hit long balls, he’s not coming out, but we’re sure he can pull it off.” for us, “Rohit said.
But Pietersen was still baffled by MI’s tactics and criticized his decision to ignore Kishan for the Super Over.
“He (had) to be incredibly exhausted and tired not to have hit in that Super Over. I think Mumbai missed a trick, sorry, but with that smaller limit, hitting for 2 minutes is nothing. Criticizing him (Ishan Kishan) , I’m criticizing the decision not to hit.
“We saw when Mayank Agarwal didn’t do it the other night (KXIP vs DC in Game 2) and Kings XI lost the contest,” Pietersen said on air after the game.
Gavaskar agreed with his English colleague and said: “There is not much time in a Super Over to plan anything. The worst thing is that the captain and the coach will have 15 people telling them what to do. If there were not 8 or 18 to get, RCB would have sent to a southpaw in Shivam Dube. If it was a 40+ year old match, Ishan Kishan would still want to go out and hit because the form is so fickle that it can work like this. So yeah I think Ishan Kishan should have come in because it was just of 6 deliveries “.
