Mercedes-Benz India announced today that it will soon begin local manufacturing of AMG models in India. AMG, which is the performance sub-brand of Mercedes-Benz, currently offers a broad portfolio of performance limousines, performance SUVs, SUV coupes and sports cars. As of now, all of them come to India as a fully built unit or CBU models. Commenting on this announcement, Martin Schwenk, Managing Director and CEO of Mercedes-Benz India said: “The decision to produce AMG locally in India underlines Mercedes-Benz’s clear roadmap for the Indian market and our long-term commitment to our Indian customers. We want AMG to be more accessible to potential customers and play a bigger role in our overall portfolio that we offer in India. This decision is an important milestone to further strengthen our AMG ambitions in India. “

Now India had the AMG GLC 43 Coupe until a couple of years ago, and the older model came with a 3-liter, 362 bhp V6 that was tuned by AMG to develop 520 Nm of torque. However, when Mercedes introduced the refreshed version in 2019, we never got it, and the delay may be due to the company planning local production of the SUV. The older pre-facelift BS4 model was priced in India at around ₹ 75 lakh (before showroom), and given current GST rates, the updated BS6 version of the SUV is claimed to be priced close to ₹ 1 crore mark. However, the fully knocked down (CKD) version of the Coupe SUV is likely to be priced at around ₹ 80 lakh (ex-showroom).
