Bhopal: A 25-year-old Dalit man was beaten to death by two upper caste men on Monday allegedly because he touched food served at a banquet in Chhatarpur in Madhya Pradesh.
According to a Times of India report, the defendants Bhoora Soni and Santosh Pal had called the victim, Devraj Anuragi, to clean up after a party in Kishanpur village. The two got angry when they noticed Anuragi serving himself food and started hitting him with sticks, which is why Anuragi later died.
Both defendants escaped and were charged with murder. “They will be caught soon,” the report said, citing Chhatarpur SP Sachin Sharma.
Atrocities on Dalits are not uncommon in India. In 2018, a Dalit man in the Mandi district of Himachal Pradesh was beaten and chastened by caste insults for simply touching the palanquin of a higher caste deity. Last year, another 21-year-old Dalit man was flogged for dining while sitting across from ‘upper caste men’ at a wedding in Dehradun.
