NEW DELHI: Members of a parliamentary committee on Thursday raised the issue of Twitter temporarily block the account of the Union minister of the interior Amit shah in 2020, as well as the misrepresentation of the Indian map by the microblogging site, the sources said.
The permanent parliamentary committee on information technology interacted on Thursday separately with representatives of Facebook, Twitter and the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology on the issue of safeguarding the rights of citizens, preventing the misuse of media platforms social and women’s safety in the digital space.
During interaction with representatives of Twitter, some members, mostly the ruling BJP, raised the issue that the platform locks Shah’s account for a short period late last year, the sources said after the meeting.
Some BJP members questioned the fact-checking mechanism on Twitter and wondered how the account of the country’s interior minister was blocked.
Twitter then said that Shah’s account was temporarily blocked due to an “inadvertent mistake” and the decision was immediately reversed.
Shah’s viewing image on Twitter was removed by Twitter in response to a “report from the copyright holder.”
The committee members also pointed to the problem of Twitter misrepresenting the map of India, one member said.
When some members asked why Twitter was removing content and blocking accounts, company representatives said they wanted to create a “healthy platform.”
But some members were dissatisfied and searched for details on how decisions were made to block some accounts and leave others, one member said.
