Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) chairman Mayawati appointed Bhim Rajbhar as chairman of the party’s Uttar Pradesh unit on Sunday, with an eye toward the votes of other backward castes (OBC) in the assembly elections of 2022.
In a tweet, Mayawati congratulated Rajbhar on his appointment as chairman of the BSP state unit.
Rajbhar will replace Munkad Ali, who has been appointed as the state coordinator for Uttarakhand. The decision to appoint a new president comes five days after the BJP swept the results of the by-elections into seven assembly seats by winning six and leaving one for the Samajwadi Party. The BSP failed to win a single seat, although the party’s candidate came second to the Bulandshahr seat.
The BSP obtained 19% of the votes, indicating that it enjoys the support of the Dalit community, but may have to regain the support of its traditional OBC voting base to win the 2022 assembly elections.
The dismissal of Munkad Ali, considered the Muslim face of the BSP, has surprised political observers. In the by-elections, Mayawati had run two Muslim candidates: Mohammad Muslim for the Bulandshahar seat and Furkan for the Naugawan Sadat seat. Despite the controversy with their statement that BSP will support the BJP candidate in the legislative council election to secure the defeat of the Samajwadi Party candidate, the BSP candidates were runners-up in the Bulandshahar seat with 65,917 votes and third in the Naugawan Sadat’s seat. , by voting 38,253 votes.

Meanwhile, the BJP, the SP and Congress are trying to woo the OBC ahead of the crucial 2022 assembly election. To counter their move, Rajbhar was appointed the new state president. The party wants to send a message to the backward community that they will get a prominent place in the organization, said a BSP leader.
While Munkad Ali was removed from the post of chairman of the state unit, the BSP is working to strengthen its base in the Muslim community. Muslim leaders have become zonal coordinators for the organization, while the party is also working on forming new alliances to broaden the base in the Muslim community.
The BSP challenged the election of the assembly in Bihar in alliance with All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) led by Asaduddin Owaisi. The Great United Secular Front (GUSF) secured victory in six seats. While the AIMIM obtained five seats, the BSP secured the victory in one seat. The BSP could replicate Bihar’s experiment in the choice of the UP assembly by linking again with AIMIM, which has expanded its base in the Muslim-dominated Rohilkhand region, the BSP leader said.
A loyal party leader, Bhim Rajbhar, is a resident of the Mau district, located in eastern UP. He served as district unit president and was promoted to the rank of zone coordinator.
