Mumbai:

A large fire broke out at a junkyard in the suburbs of Mankhurd on Friday, in which a 40-year-old fire officer was slightly injured during the firefighting operation, authorities said.

The fire broke out in Mandala, an area dominated by slums in the eastern suburb, around 2:45 p.m., they said.

“The fire broke out in the junkyard, where various things such as plastic objects, cans and wood material were kept. It was labeled a ” level 3 ” (major) fire,” said an officer from the brigade of firefighters.

Sixteen fire trucks, 11 water tankers are involved in the fire suppression operation, which is still underway, he said.

“Fire station officer Harish Nadkar suffered minor injuries during the firefighting operation and was rushed to Shatabdi hospital in Govandi. His condition is stable,” the official added.

There are several junkyards in the Mandala area, which is located near the landfill.

Mumbai Mayor Kishori Pednekar visited the site to take stock of the firefighting operation.

“Efforts are being made to ensure that the fire does not spread to nearby huts,” he said.

The place where the fire broke out is located on the collector’s land of the Mumbai suburban district, he said.

“Complaints had been registered with the collection office by the civic body’s K-West district officer and local corporate from time to time about the illegal storage of oil barrels at the site,” Ms Pednekar said.

“Even steps in this direction had been taken with the help of the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) and the police in the past, but the local land mafia re-installed their hideouts as soon as the authorities returned,” said the mayor.

According to the fire brigade, a fire is labeled as level 3, when at least 12 fire trucks are involved in fighting fires.

There are a total of five levels of fire and the “brigade call” is the highest level of emergency, officials said.
