Maruti Suzuki managed to sell 2,098 units of the S-Cross last month, which is significantly more than the previous diesel model.
India’s largest automaker Maruti Suzuki has many successful vehicles in its line. However, its flagship product, the S-Cross, was never one of those. Previously, the crossover SUV was available with a 1.3-liter turbocharged diesel engine from Fiat, but it was discontinued when BS6 standards went into effect.
Last month Maruti launched the BS6 compliant S-Cross on the Indian market. The vehicle now has a 1.5-liter ‘K series’ petrol engine, which generates a maximum power of 105 hp and a maximum torque of 138 Nm. It is available with a 5-speed manual or 4-speed automatic transmission. The latter was not previously available on it and could be one of the reasons for the increase in popularity of the S-Cross.
In September 2020, Maruti recorded a sales figure of 2,098 units for its flagship, representing a year-on-year increase of 101.73% (1,040 units sold in September 2019). On a monthly basis, the manufacturer has registered a decrease of 13.98 percent (2,527 units sold in August 2020). Interestingly, the gasoline S-Cross is actually more popular than the older diesel model!

Indian buyers, especially in urban areas, are increasingly attracted to automatic transmissions. The ease of driving a car, especially in bumper-to-bumper urban traffic, makes it an extremely practical option. The SUV incorporates a mild hybrid system that helps improve the car’s fuel economy. Sadly, Maruti hasn’t restyled the S-Cross since 2017, and now it feels a bit outdated.
Other features include a 7-inch touchscreen infotainment system with Apple Carplay and Android Auto, Suzuki Connect, reverse parking camera, cruise control, automatic climate control, electrically operated ORVM, automatic headlights, windshield wipers with sensor rain, on / off button and IRVM with automatic dimming. However, the rear air conditioning vents and the sunroof are not available, not even as an option.
This crossover from Maruti is significantly more affordable than its biggest rival, the Hyundai Creta. The former is priced at Rs. 8.39 lakh to 12.39 lakh, while the latter ranges from Rs. 9.99 lakh to 17.2 lakh (all prices are ex-showroom, New Delhi). That said, the Creta outsells the Maruti Suzuki S-Cross by a large margin. Not only does it offer more equipment, but it also offers better engines and transmission options, making it an overall better value product.
