Marcus Stoinis was seen clutching a Hulk toy figure at the end of second place. His muscular physique is one of the obvious reasons the moniker has been hyped in the Delhi Capitals locker room. His holding of Kane Williamson’s key window, which pops the veins and thrusts the biceps, first saw the figure make an appearance in the dugout. They had been hoping to get it out at the right time, as several of their plans had revolved around Stoinis’ performances today.
The first of those plans was to move him to the opening position. Delhi was looking to take the game by the neck. They had chosen to fight the current in this area. But it was a decision that suited their strengths, given that they had been very successful defending goals in the tournament.
‘Go smash’ could have been a simple and appropriate game plan that was given to Stoinis. He was not a rookie at the task having successfully started for the Melbourne Stars in the BigBash League. There were theories circulating during his first stint at BBL that Stoinis required a bit of time before starting and therefore the starting position suited him better. But in the IPL so far, Stoinis has shown that his game has evolved more than that. You could just smash up front in the middle order if you need to, making adjustments to your game plans if necessary. Furthermore, his courage and form in scoring 65 was the only saving grace for Delhi from his horrible outing against Mumbai in the first qualifier.
“Ricky spoke to me a couple of times about the possibility of opening the hitting. And yes, I just resolved that during this game this was the right time to do it,” was all Stoinis revealed about the plans. But it was clear that the decision to untie him had a lot going for him. “I needed a great start,” was Shreyas Iyer’s reasoning.
For Stoinis, the only obstacle at the start was a razor-sharp Sandeep Sharma who was swinging the ball and bowling with perfect plans. His first 7 balls brought only 3 and also a knockdown catch that ruined SRH’s well-established plans. But that fallen catch also flipped a switch at Stoinis. He would pick two limits from Sharma’s next two installments, and go on to make Jason Holder pay for the lost catch by hitting 18 in the next. Work done.
But his role wasn’t going to end with that part. In the second half, with the pitch proving to be a belter, Delhi was forced to reject the overs from its spinners. And Iyer turned to Stoinis once more, first in the power play. All Delhi required of him was that he go far enough with SRH in the rear. But Stoinis delivered more than that with two wickets at the end. Seen as the obvious choice to follow, SRH lost key ground, including Williamson’s all-important one, to Stoinis’ seemingly harmless volleys.
“My thought process was to change my grips and see what I was getting out of the wicket and change my tactics with wide yorkers and slower balls,” was how Stoinis would explain his methods in the post-match presentation. All three portholes fell with Stoinis trying to get a little grip on the surface running her fingers through the seam. He would also go on to explain a bit more about his approach to bowling at the press conference.
“Playing bowling in this format is always difficult. I guess it’s more about planning. Before you hit the ground, you have a good idea, you are talking to the captain and the coach about the different players in your strategies, I think. it’s important to stick to your own strengths. From there, be clear. In T20, you’re often not trying to exactly take a wicket, you’re trying to control your speed of execution … control the game. Build some pressure that then leads to portholes “.
For the capitals of Delhi to empower Stoinis, this approach is believed to have played an important role in gaining trust in addition to the form it has been leading. An understanding of his own strengths and a willingness to bring out his own game plans and bring it up for discussion has seen Stoinis grow in stature throughout the tournament.
This combination of the Hulk with a touch of Bruce Banner has already taken Delhi to a place they have never experienced. They would also be wishing their powers kept up good in their first IPL final.
