Marco Materazzi reveals what he said to Zinedine Zidane before the final World Cup clash

Almost 14 years have passed since one of the most incredible moments in football history.

It was the final of the 2006 World Cup between France and Italy.

Zinedine Zidane had put France 1-0 with an incredibly indifferent Panenka penalty before Marco Materazzi equalized before the break.

With the level of scores after 90 minutes, we entered overtime, which is when the two scorers faced each other.

Zidane and Materazzi were seen in conversation before the French captain stepped forward and planted his head on the Italian’s chest. After consulting with officials off the field, Zidane was shown a red card in his last game as a professional footballer.

Italy finally won on penalties, but everyone wanted to know what Materazzi had said to provoke Zidane’s crazy reaction.

Initially, reports claimed that Materazzi had insulted Zidane’s mother. However, comments from the Italian years later denied it: they admitted that it was his sister he spoke of.

“My mother died when I was 15, she would never have insulted hers,” Materazzi said in 2017. “I talked about her sister.”

But what had he said about Zidane’s sister?

Well, 14 years later, Materazzi finally revealed exactly what he said.

Quoted by people like AS, Le Parisien, and Football Italia, Materazzi was answering a few questions on Instagram Live earlier this week, and obviously Zidane’s header came up.

This is what he had to say:

“Zidane’s head bang? I wasn’t expecting it at the time. I was lucky that the whole episode surprised me because if I expected something like this to happen and I was ready for it, I’m sure both of them would have ended up getting kicked out.” , explained the defender.

“There was a bit of contact between us in the area. He scored the goal for France in the first half and our coach (Marcello Lippi) told me to score it. After that first brush between us, I apologized but reacted badly,” Materazzi he remembered.

“The last tackles, altercations and exchanges continued until 110 minutes, when things reached a critical point.

After the third crash, I frowned and he replied, “I’ll give you my shirt later.” I replied that I would rather have his sister than his shirt.

That was enough for Zidane to lose his cool and stick his head into Materazzi’s chest.

It was the last thing the legendary midfielder did on a soccer field.
