MUMBAI: The Maharashtra The government on Tuesday took several measures to alleviate the restless Marathas, including benefits for community members intended for EWS, in light of the Supreme Court halted the implementation of the quota in employment and education for the community.
According to an official statement, the Maharashtra Cabinet also decided to offer jobs in the Maharashtra State Road Transport Corporation to the heirs of those who lost their lives during the Maratha fee protests.

He said action will be taken on the proposals in this regard within a month of their submission.
The government’s decisions came after the Supreme Court earlier this month suspended implementation of the Maharashtra law of 2018 granting reservations to Marathas in education and employment.
This was followed by community members who organized protests on the issue in various parts of the state.

The Maharashtra government filed a request with the highest court of the Supreme Court on Monday, seeking to overturn the high court’s suspension on the implementation of the quota, according to the statement.
“The benefits destined for the economically weaker section (EWS) will be delivered to those of the economically and socially backward category (ESCB),” the statement read.
The government said that the Rajarshi Chhatrapati Shahu Maharaj Shikshan Shulkh Shishyavrutti Yojana scholarship program, previously intended for ESCB students, will now also apply to EWS students.
“The state government has approved a 600 million rupee fund for the current fiscal year. Provisions will be made if there is a need for additional funds,” the statement read.
Similarly, the Panjabrao Deshmukh Hostel Maintenance Subsidy Scheme for ESCB students will be applicable to EWS students, according to the statement.
“A fund of 80 million rupees has been approved for it. More funds will be made available if necessary,” he added.
The government said substantial funds and manpower will be made available to the SARTHI institute.
The Chhatrapati Shahu Maharaj Research Training and Human Development Institute (SARTHI) is a non-profit government enterprise dedicated to research, policy advocacy, training, etc. for the socio-economic and educational development of the Maratha, Kunbi communities and families dependent on agriculture.
“SARTHI has demanded a fund of Rs 130 crore for the current financial year. Provisions will be made if more funds are required,” the statement said.
The statement says that financial assistance is being provided to the unemployed youth through the Financially Backward Development Corporation Annasaheb Patil, and the capital for it has been increased by Rs 400 crore.
Speaking about the process of withdrawing the cases against the protesters from the Maratha quota, the state government said that only 26 were pending and that action will be taken in a month.
Speaking to reporters after the cabinet meeting, PWD Minister Ashok Chavan said the government referred the vacation request to the highest court of the Supreme Court after holding talks with ministers, opposition leaders, representatives of Maratha teams and legal experts.
Urban Development Minister Eknath Shinde, who accompanied Chavan during the press conference, said: “The prime minister and cabinet have made the decision that there will be no shortage of funds. These decisions will bring relief to the community.”
