Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday called on the country’s people to promote and buy locally made products during the festival season. Addressing the nation through Mann Ki Baat, he also listed a unique success story.
The prime minister spoke about Pulwama in Jammu and Kashmir, which is emerging as a center for pencil making.
Today, Pulwama is playing an important role in the education of the entire nation. Today, if students across the country do their homework, prepare notes, it is because of the hard work of the people of Pulwama, ”Prime Minister Modi said in his 70th Mann Ki Baat speech.
“Almost 90 percent of the demand for pencil slate in the country is satisfied by the Kashmir Valley. And Pulwama has a huge stake in that. At one time, we used to import pencil wood, but now Pulwama is making the country self-sufficient in this field, ”he added.
PM Modi said that the wood from Chinar in the Kashmir Valley has a high moisture content and softness, which makes it more suitable for pencil production.
“Oukhoo in Pulwama is known as the ‘pencil village.’ There are many units dedicated to the production of pencil slate that are generating employment. And in these units, women are working in great numbers. Pulwama earned this distinctive identity when the locals decided to do something new. They took a risk and dedicated themselves to it, ”Prime Minister Modi said.
“I am grateful to the Pulwama brothers and sisters and their families who are making an invaluable contribution in educating young minds in India,” added the prime minister.
In his monthly radio address, Prime Minister Modi wished the people in Dussehra and said that with the arrival of various festivals, they must show patience and follow health guidelines in the wake of the coronavirus disease pandemic (Covid-19 ).
He also paid enthusiastic tributes to the Prime Minister of the Interior of India, Sardar Patel, whose birthday is October 31, and called on the people to work for the unity of the country through his words and deeds.
Pm Modi also recalled former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, whose death anniversary is October 31.
