A traffic policeman was dragged on the hood of a car for almost a kilometer on a busy road in the Chinchwad area near Pune after he tried to stop the vehicle, as its driver and another occupant were found without face masks in amid the pandemic, a police officer said Friday.
The incident occurred on Thursday night and the traffic officer, Abasaheb Sawant, suffered a leg injury, he said.
The driver, identified as Yuvraj Hanuvate (49), was arrested, police said.
“Abasaheb Sawant and other traffic police personnel were stationed at Ahimsa Chowk in Chinchwad on Thursday night. They were collecting fines from people who were found driving or traveling without a mask and for other traffic-related offenses,” said the Chinchwad police officer. said the station.
“At that time, Mr. Sawant and his colleagues found Hanuvate driving the car without a face mask. There was another occupant in the vehicle, who was also without a mask. The policemen directed Hanuvate to stop the car. However, in Instead of stopping, the defendant increased the speed of the vehicle in an attempted escape, ”he said.
“While Mr. Sawant was standing in front of the car, he fell on the hood and clung to it. The defendant did not stop the car and kept driving with Abasaheb Sawant on the hood for some distance,” it added.
Speaking to the PTI news agency, Sawant said the defendant continued to drive the car with him on the hood for almost a kilometer, before being stopped by other people on the road.
“During the incident, I injured my leg when I was under the steering wheel,” he added.
Chinchwad Police have charged and arrested Hanuvate, a resident of the Pimple Nilakh area, under the relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code for “attempted murder”, “assault or use of criminal force to dissuade an official “Public Servant of Duty”, “Willfully causing serious harm to dissuade a public servant from duty” and the relevant sections of the Motor Vehicle Law.
