Guwahati, November 30
A man was arrested by Delhi’s Guwahati police for appearing in the Joint-Major Entrance Exam on behalf of the candidate who “led” the test in Assam, authorities said Sunday.
A team, led by Deputy Police Commissioner (West), Suprotive Lal Baruah, arrested Pradeep Kumar, the eighth defendant to be caught in connection with the case, they said.
Prime charged Bhargav Deka, the owner of the city-based training institute Global Edu Light, who was arrested on November 1.
The other detainees in the case are Neel Nakshatra Das, who ‘led’ the examination in the state and is currently on bail, his doctor father Jyotirmoy Das, an employee of the coaching institute and three other alleged accomplices.
The employee was arrested on October 31 and the other five on October 28.
Baruah heads a special investigation team, created to investigate the scam that came to light due to a viral phone conversation, in which Neel allegedly admitted to his friend that a proxy was used to appear in the exam, conducted on September 5. . .
Subsequently, a certain Mitradev Sharma filed a complaint on October 23 at the Azara police station here, alleging that Neel did not take the exam but instead used a proxy.
Neel had allegedly entered the examination center in the Borjhar area but left after registering biometric assistance with the help of a supervisor, and another person took the test on his behalf.
The author had also alleged that his parents, both practicing doctors, had paid a sum of Rs 15 to 20 lakhs to a private training institute in Guwahati to help him pass the exam. PTI
