Man Utd player ratings as Edinson Cavani saves the day and stuns Southampton

Manchester United rallied from two goals against to claim victory at Southampton, with super substitute Edinson Cavani scoring a winner in injury time.

The Uruguayan hit a double, with Bruno Fernandes also finding the net, as Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s men roared back to win on the south coast.

The Red Devils were unbeaten in the first period and had chances, but were met with two fewer goals at halftime thanks to Jan Bednarek and James Ward-Prowse.

Cavani and Dean Henderson were featured at halftime, the latter for the injured David de Gea, and United gradually took over the second half.

Bruno Fernandes scored first, turning home after a Cavani cross, before the veteran hit man nodded to score the tie.

And Cavani duly marked the winner at the end of the day, driving home a Marcus Rashford cross, to secure victory.

Cavani’s late doppelganger did the business

It was the 10th time United had come from behind to beat Southampton in Premier League history.

Here are the player ratings for St Mary’s …

David de Gea 6

Substituted at halftime after getting injured trying to save a Ward-Prowse free throw.

Aaron Wan-Bissaka 6

He struggled defensively when Djenepo rejected him. Got better.

Harry Maguire 7

United were once again exposed on defense, and Maguire had a difficult afternoon.

Victor Lindelof 6

His association with Maguire still doesn’t seem strong or secure enough.

Alex Telles 7

Dangerous moving forward, I suspect defensively, a snapshot of United’s display.

Telles did well to advance

Nemanja Matic 7

Solid but unspectacular. Fairly consistent throughout the game, which was a rarity.

Donny Van de Beek 6

He still feels like he hasn’t found his role at United yet. Good times.

Fred 7

Busy and hardworking, he participated in two of United’s goals. Good energy.

Bruno Fernandes 8

Poor first half and then dragged United back into the contest. Talisman.

Fernandes played a key role in the comeback

Marcus Rashford 6

Movement and rhythm always make it a threat, but it needs to be more clinical.

Mason Greenwood 5

He did not take great risks in the first half and was hooked at the break. You must improvise.
