Parts of southern Bengaluru were flooded on Friday after heavy rains. More rain is expected today.

Dramatic images of some men rescuing a newborn in a flooded street near Bengaluru was one of many photos and videos that emerged from the city after Silicon Valley in India was hit by heavy rain on Friday.

The viral rescue video on social media is claimed to be from the Hosakerehalli area on the outskirts of Bengaluru. It shows a man carrying a 15-day-old baby on his head in water up to his shoulders and handing the child to a woman. He is then seen wading into another flooded house, accompanied by other men shouting instructions.

The youths also saved the life of a girl from another flooded house in the southern area of ​​Bengaluru, where overnight rain flooded the streets and forced people to evacuate their homes.

Numerous other videos of flooding in Bengaluru, after the city received 13.2mm of rain from 2.30pm to 5.30pm on Friday, show cars washed away in low-lying areas; traffic was affected as vehicles, private and public, stalled in several feet of water.

According to the meteorological department, “light to moderate” rains flooded parts of the “districts of Bengaluru Rural, Bengaluru Urban, Tumkur, Kolar, Chikkaballapur, Ramanagara, Hassan, Chikkamagaluru, Kodagu and Dakshina Kannada”.

According to the Indian Meteorological Department, the city is expected to “receive light to moderate spells of rain with intense and intermittent gusts” today in and around Bengaluru.

Most places on the Karnataka coast, the southern interior of Karnataka and in isolated locations on the northern interior of Karnataka are also expected to receive more rain today.

This year, Karnataka has been hit by multiple flood spells that have caused losses of more than 11 billion rupees so far, according to the state government.
