Bijnor:
A man was arrested under the anti-conversion law in Bijnor, police said Wednesday. Police officer Sanjay Kumar said the defendant, Saqib, abducted a girl and forced her to convert her religion.
“A girl from Dhampur was missing for the last few days. However, the police found the girl and the accused. After questioning, the man was arrested for kidnapping a girl and forcing her to convert her religion,” Kumar told ANI .
“Saqib concealed his true identity and introduced the girl as Sonu. He kidnapped her and tried to force her to convert the religion. A case brought under an ordinance against illegal religious conversions and the SC / ST Law,” he added.
In early November, Uttar Pradesh had enacted the UP Illegal Conversion of Religion Prohibition Ordinance of 2020.
The new law calls for a prison sentence for the defendant of one to five years, with a fine of 15,000 rupees, if he is convicted of carrying out forced conversions for marriage.
