The remains of Major Anuj Sood, who was killed in an antiterrorist operation in northern Kashmir, were sent to the flames with all military honors here on Tuesday.
He was among five members of the security forces personnel who died in an encounter while fighting militants in the Handwara area of the Kupwara border district in Jammu and Kashmir on Saturday night.
The remains of Major Sood had arrived from Srinagar on Monday afternoon.
Slogans such as “Vande Mataram”, “Bharat Mata Ki Jai”, “Major Anuj Amar Rahe” were raised when the body of the Army officer, wrapped in tricolor, was brought to the cremation site at Mani Majra here from his residence in Panchkula in an ornate place Army vehicle
Before cremation, many on-duty and retired officers put floral wreaths on the mortal remains.
Several senior army officers and members of Major Sood’s family, including his wife, father, sister Harshita, who is also an army officer, were present during the cremation.
A gun salute was given to the deceased soul.
The army officer’s funeral pyre was lit by his father.
Major Sood’s father, Brigadier General Chandrakant Sood (retired), had previously told the media that the news of death shocked him, but at the same time, he was proud of the supreme sacrifice the officer had made for his homeland. .
