One of the most anticipated cars in 2020, the Mahindra Thar was launched in India at a starting price of Rs 9.80 lakh (ex-showroom, all of India). The rugged off-road SUV is available in the AX series – AX and AX Opt, and the LX series – LX manual transmission and LX automatic transmission. The AX series is available in a six- or four-seat layout with a soft top, convertible top, and a hardtop option.
Exterior
The newly launched Mahindra Thar is available in six color options: Rocky Beige, Aquamarine, Mystical Copper, Fury Red, Napoli Black and Galaxy Gray. In terms of dimensions, the new Thar has a length of 3,985 mm, a width of 1,820 mm (the LX variant is 1,855 mm wide) and a height of 1,920 mm (hardtop height of 1,844 mm). The vehicle has a wheelbase of 2,450mm and a ground clearance of 219mm. Interestingly, the off-road SUV has a fording depth of 650mm along with an approach and departure angle of 41.2 degrees and 36 degrees, respectively.
AX variants get a black finish on the vertical grille slats and ride on 16-inch steel wheels. The LX variant features a rich silver finish on the vertical grille grilles, front fog lamps and rides on 18-inch deep silver alloy wheels branded with Thar.
Inside
The AX trim has vinyl seat upholstery, while the LX trim offers fabric seat upholstery. Standard feature list includes center dome light, 12V accessory socket, lockable glove box, central locking, in-dash grab handle for passenger, illuminated key fob, manual day / night IRVM, lane departure indicator one touch and power windows in the front doors. Additionally, depending on the variant, the feature list on the Mahindra Thar further includes a seven-inch touchscreen infotainment display with navigation, cruise control, height-adjustable driver’s seat, reclining rear seats, audio and telephone controls. steering controlled, USB charging port, Tyretronics, tire steering control system, MID color display and more.
The list of standard safety features includes ABS with EBD and brake assist, dual airbags, seat belt reminder, provision of snow chains for tires (except LX trim), panic brake signal, warning vehicle overspeed switch and passenger airbag deactivation switch. The optional equipment AX and the LX variant also have an ISOFIX child seat in the rear seats, a roll cage and a three-point seat belt for the rear passengers. Safety features such as ESP with rollover mitigation, speed-sensing front door locks and anti-theft alarm are available exclusively on LX trim options only.
Motor
The newly launched Mahindra Thar is available in both gasoline and diesel engine options. The gasoline engine is available in four versions: AX Standard, AX, AX Opt and LX. The diesel engine option is available in three versions: AX, AX Opt and LX. The mStallion 150 TGDi 2.0-liter petrol engine that produces 150 hp at 5,000 rpm and 300 Nm of torque between 1,250-3,000 rpm. The automatic option produces 320 Nm of torque between 1,500 and 3,000 rpm. Customers can choose between the six-speed manual transmission and six-speed torque converter options.
The diesel version has a 2.2-liter mHawk 130 engine that generates 130 hp at 3,750 rpm and 300 Nm of torque between 1,600-2,800 rpm. This engine is mated to a six-speed and six-speed manual torque converter option. A four-wheel drive system with high and low reduction gears is standard on all variants in both gasoline and diesel versions.
