The Maharashtra government decided on Sunday to bear the travel expenses of those migrant workers who lacked resources but wanted to return to their home states amid the coronavirus-induced confinement.

A Government Order (GO) stated that migrant workers must register with the local police

and district collectors and complete the necessary health check-up.

Once eligible under the new rules for the trip, the collectors of the district in question will transfer the required amount to Indian Railways, he said, adding that the required amount will be transferred from the CM Relief Fund.

People trapped in other parts of the country but wishing to return to Maharashtra must also follow the same procedure to register with local authorities, who will receive funds from the CM office to cover their travel expenses.
