Aurangabad: At least 15 migrant workers died after being hit by a freight train near Jalna in Maharashtra. All the workers were returning to Madhya Pradesh and were sleeping on the tracks when the accident occurred around 5.15 a.m., the PTI news agency reported, citing officials. five workers who were injured were taken to the Aurangabad civil hospital.
“An accident occurred near Karmad, Aurangabad, when an empty rake of freight cars ran over some people. RPF and local police are arriving at the scene to assess the situation. More details are expected,” said the Director of Public Relations ( CPRO) of South Central Railway (SCR) said.
According to initial reports, the workers were walking on the train track on their way back to Madhya Pradesh. Later they slept on the tracks and were run over by the freight train traveling between Jalna and Aurangabad.
Unconfirmed reports also hinted that there were children among the group sleeping on the tracks. The tragedy comes a day after the gas leak incident that killed 11 people in Vizag.
The permanent blockage of the coronavirus has triggered an exodus of migrant workers. While the railways have started Shrimik trains to bring stranded workers back, many have begun to walk to their respective states. As of Thursday, Railways has operated 201 special trains.
