Mumbai:

The names of localities in the state based on caste will be changed, the Maharashtra government announced.

The decision was made during the cabinet meeting, said a statement issued by the Chief Minister’s Office.

Names like Mahar-wada, Bouddh-wada, Mang-wada, Dhor-vasti, Brahman-wada, Mali-galli are common, but they are inappropriate in a progressive state like Maharashtra, he said.

These names generally indicate that members of a particular community live in the area.
