Maharashtra recorded 20,590 cases of coronavirus disease (Covid-19) from February 6 to 12, of which 169 people lost their lives and more than 20,200 recovered. The weekly average for the Covid-19 case status stood at 2,941 and there has been a sharp increase in the daily count since Wednesday (February 10). The total number of cases is close to 2.1 million and recoveries amount to 1,972,475. The ascending graph matches the unlocking performed by the state. Schools are gradually reopening in the state and Mumbai premises have been opened for everyone with time restrictions as of February 1.
Up to 3,451 cases were added on Wednesday; 3,297 on Thursday and 3,670 cases were added on Friday registering the highest for the week. Friday also saw the highest deaths of the week (36), bringing the total to 51,451. On February 8, Maharashtra recorded the lowest number of Covid-29 cases (2,216) and deaths (15) this week. Meanwhile, the highest number of Covid-19 recoveries for the week was Thursday (Feb 11) when 6,107 people were cured / discharged / recovered.

Since the start of the pandemic in India in January last year, Maharashtra has been among the worst affected states. According to the Union health ministry, the state is the second largest contributor to the number of daily cases in India. In September last year, daily cases exceeded 18,000 and the highest increase was on September 10, when 23,446 cases of Covid-19 were reported.
However, when Covid-19 started to recede across the country, Maharashtra also saw an improvement in the overall situation. On October 6, 2020, 10,244 cases were reported, which had been the lowest in the previous two months. From there, Covid-19 cases fell even further and on January 18 of this year just over 1,924 cases were seen, which had been the lowest since May 2020. But the Covid-19 curve in Maharashtra it is increasing again since the beginning of February.
So far, doses of the Covid-19 vaccine have been administered to 608,570 people in the state with 34,889 people vaccinated on Thursday. Prime Minister Uddhav Thackeray said Thursday that mobile laboratories to test Covid-19 will be available across the state. These labs could perform 3,000 tests per day and the reports would be available within 24 hours, he added. Amid the wake of the new Covid-19 strain from countries like the United Kingdom (United Kingdom) and South Africa, Thackeray said the government will continue to prioritize the tracking and treatment of infected patients.
