Thane:
Police arrested a Nalasopara man in Maharashtra’s Palghar district for allegedly misleading several thousand-rupee merchants by making female-voice phone calls asking for change for a 2,000-rupee bill, an official said Saturday.
The defendant, Manish Ambekar, 40, was arrested on Friday, said Mira Bhayandar spokesman and Vasai-Virar Police Commissioner Tukaram Tatkar.
Various crimes have been recorded against the defendants for defrauding merchants and shopkeepers at different locations in Thane, Palghar, Mumbai, Nashik and Pune districts, he said.
“The defendant used to target general stores, medical stores, jewelry stores and grain wholesalers. She would call them with a woman’s voice and tell them that she was calling from a hospital or a house located near her store,” he said.
“The defendant then ordered certain things in their stores and said they should send change for a 2,000 rupee bill. Then he waited at the entrance of the buildings and when the delivery man arrived, he used to say that he was there on behalf of the ‘woman who called, ‘”Tatkar added.
“He would then take the smaller denomination bills from the dealer saying he would get the 2,000 rupee note from the woman. However, after collecting the money, he would disappear from the scene,” he added.
Recently, a similar incident occurred in Nalasopara and a crime of cheating was recorded.
During the investigation, the police received notice that the accused involved in this crime was going to his residence in Nalasopara. Consequently, a trap was set and he was arrested.
“During the raid, the police recovered 1.60 lakh rupees in cash from the defendants,” he said.
