Maharashtra Governor BS Koshyari has given students permission to sit for seniors exams online from home, state Higher and Technical Education Minister Uday Samant said on Thursday.

He said that the state government will ask the University Scholarship Commission (UGC) to extend the existing deadline for taking exams from late September to late October, adding that the harshness of the exams will also be reduced.

The Supreme Court had confirmed the UGC guidelines last week and said that no state and university can promote students in the final year / semester without taking exams. The court also ruled that the UGC’s directives to universities and colleges to take senior exams before September 30 were within its domain. “Governor BS Koshyari has given permission for seniors to take the exams online. They can take the exams from home,” Samant said.

“We also plan to present the results before October 31 to save the students’ academic year,” he added. Samant, along with the department’s prime minister Prajakt Tanpure, had met with Koshyari at the Raj Bhavan here on Wednesday to discuss the issue of taking examinations in light of the Supreme Court verdict.

The minister said he held a meeting with 13 vice-chancellors of public universities on how to take the final year exams according to the instructions of the higher court. “We are planning to hold the practical exams in September. All the papers and their evaluation will be completed before October 31 and the result will be available at that time,” he said.

“The practical exams could take place from September 15. We are also trying to take these exams online rather than having students visit universities,” he said. “We are also going to ask the UGC to extend the existing deadline for exams from the end of September to the end of October. We will also reduce the hardness of the exams,” he said.

In its order, the SC had said that if any state or territory of the Union, in exercise of its jurisdiction under the Disaster Management Law, has decided that it is not possible to take the exam before September 30, then it can present a Request to the UGC for Extension of the term.
