The Maharashtra government has allowed home delivery of spirits to prevent crowds in stores. However, the order, issued by the Interior Department, will take effect only after the guidelines are finalized, a senior official said.

Only those who have permission to drink can request home delivery.

Liquor stores, which were able to reopen on May 5, will be able to receive orders over the phone.

The purpose is to prevent overcrowding in liquor stores and prevent the spread of the coronavirus, the official said.

“The order was issued today, but will not take effect until the detailed guidelines are framed. The government will issue the guidelines in the next two days,” he told the PTI news agency.

“The buyer and the seller must decide the payment method. A person can order up to 12 bottles of IMFL (foreign liquor made in India),” he added.

The rules on owning various types of liquor in the home are displayed on the website of the excise department that buyers can refer to before ordering, the official said.
