Maharashtra extends Covid-19 lockdown until Oct 31, Mumbai local to allow dabbawalas – mumbai news


The Maharashtra government said on Wednesday that the lockdown imposed to contain the spread of the novel coronavirus disease (Covid-19) has been extended until October 31.

However, hotels, food courts, restaurants and bars will be able to operate from October 5 with 50% capacity, the state government added.

The Central Railway is scheduled to introduce eight additional services in Mumbai, including two special trains for women from October 1 to reduce overcrowding.

Four of the new special trains will run on the main line, including two special trains for women between the CSMT-Kalyan stations, while four services will run on the Thane-Vashi Transport line.

Apart from this, the Dabbawalahs will be able to board local trains and all trains within the state will start operating with immediate effect.

Maharashtra, which is one of the states in India hardest hit by the Covid-19 pandemic, has recorded nearly 1.4 million cases and 36,662 deaths so far. Active cases in the state exceed 260,000, while 1,088,322 people have recovered.

Maharashtra is the largest contributor to the country’s Covid-19 count in terms of active and recovered cases.

Meanwhile, the Union Ministry of the Interior issued guidelines on Wednesday for the reopening of economic activities across the country amid the current Covid-19 situation. Although there is an increase in Covid-19 cases, the Center has offered more relaxations.

Movie theaters and multiplex cinemas will be allowed to open starting October 15, while for the reopening of schools and training institutions, states / UT have the flexibility to make a decision after October 15.
