MUMBAI: The State Home Department Run by NCP Anil Deshmukh drafted a 40-member high-level team led by Kokan Sanjay Mohite’s rank inspector general to arrest Arnab goswami in 2018 suicidal complicity case.
Preparations for “Operation Arnab” began a few days after Raigad police obtained permission to reopen the investigation into the alleged suicides of architect Anway Naik and his mother Kumud in 2018. In total, 40 staff members came from the police from Mumbai and Raigad.
Mohite drafted the plan to arrest Arnab, while the responsibility for executing it was entrusted to high-profile matchmaking specialist Sachin Vaze. “For the team led by Mohite, it was a challenging task in view of the mighty Arnab. We acted very carefully, all members of the team observed restraint despite the provocation, ” a senior cabinet member told TOI.
The cabinet member said that after the preliminary investigation, it was confirmed that Arnab was allegedly involved in inciting the suicide case. “Our people made several rounds around the building where Arnab resided. It was a secret operation. We were afraid that if the information was leaked, Arnab could flee the city to avoid arrest, ” he said.
Arnab was arrested in the early hours of Wednesday. Police personnel chose the hours in the morning to make sure he was home. “It was a planned operation, even small problems were solved. It was decided who will knock on the door, who will speak to Arnab and his family members, and what the course of action would be if he resists. Arnab resisted. However, after Vaze explained the legal position to him if he did not join the investigation, it was a smooth matter, ” he said.
Interior Minister Anil Deshmukh said under the Government of Fadnavis, every effort had been made to resolve the case. “When I listened to the widow and her daughter, I felt the impact of my life. I couldn’t believe this could happen in Maharashtra. We will take the case to its logical end, ” he said.
In launching a frontal attack on the BJP, particularly Fadnavis, Deshmukh said that the BJP politicized the Sushant Singh Rajput suicide, although there was no evidence while he was here despite a clear suicide note, Fadnavis had suppressed it. “We will guarantee justice for the Naik family,” Deshmukh said.
