Maharashtra could reopen schools from Nov 23: state education minister

Maharashtra’s school education minister, Varsha Gaikwad, said on Friday that a proposal to reopen schools, which have been closed since March amid the coronavirus pandemic, has been sent to the state government for students in class 9 a the 12, according to the ANI news agency.

“We have proposed to the state government to restart classes in schools for classes 9, 10, 11 and 12 as of November 23. Additionally, we have proposed that the exams for classes 10 and 12 take place in May, rather than February or March. , ”Varsha Gaikwad was quoted by ANI.

The Maharashtra State Board of Secondary and Higher Education (MSBSHSE) generally conducts the exams for Class 10 and Class 12 in February and March. Which has not been possible this year due to the closure of schools due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Gaikwad said that taking exams in May becomes crucial because students living in rural areas will not be able to get to their exam centers due to the heavy monsoon that hits the state each year in June, July and August. He also mentioned that since students have not been able to attend physical classes this year, his priority is to get them back to their classrooms before they sit for board exams. With this in mind, the decision was made to reopen schools beginning Nov. 23, for classes 9-12, to help students prepare for board exams, he said.

Maharashtra’s proposal to postpone the board exams comes on the heels of a similar decision by Gujarat to reschedule these exams in the state for May. In other parts of the country, states have slowly started opening schools for high school students before board examinations begin.

Andhra Pradesh also began running physical classes from November 2 to students in classes 9 and 10 in public and private schools across the state, after a long interval of seven months.
