However, it is necessary to monitor the situation in at least seven or eight states / UT, based on the cases of the past week. While Maharashtra recorded an 81% increase over the previous week, MP recorded a 43% increase, Punjab 31%, J&K 22%, Chhattisgarh 13% and Haryana 11%.
Delhi sees 4.7% increase in cases
Chandigarh registered a 43% increase, although the number of cases was low, 187. On the other hand, Karnataka (4.6% increase) and Gujarat (4%) showed moderate increases but have registered a relatively high number of cases. Karnataka recorded 2,879 new cases during the week (February 15-21), the fourth highest in the country after Maharashtra, Kerala and Tamil Nadu. In Gujarat, the case count for the week was 1,860.
While Delhi also saw a 4.7% increase in infections, the absolute numbers are still quite low in the capital with 954 new cases reported in the week.
Meanwhile, in another sign of a resurgence of the pandemic, India recorded 10,570 new cases on Monday. This was the highest count on a Monday in the last six weeks. Cases drop every Monday due to decreased testing and staff shortages over the weekend.
The seven-day moving average of daily cases in the country increased for the eighth consecutive day to 12,981. The index, which provides an average of daily cases for the past week, had fallen to a low of 11,428 on February 10. It has been increasing steadily since February 14.
On the positive side, the death toll from the virus has not increased. On Monday, there were 77 deaths in the country, the lowest number in one day since May 3 last year. Punjab reported 389 cases Monday, the highest since Dec. 23, and up to 15 deaths.
Following an increase in daily Covid-19 cases for the past six days, Maharashtra and Mumbai reported a slight decline on Monday that officials attributed to less testing than usual on Sunday. But increasing graphics in the Vidarbha region led to the imposition of more localized curbs.
The state reported 5,210 cases and 18 deaths, the lowest in two weeks, bringing the total to 21,06,094 and the balance to 51,806. Mumbai reported 761 cases, the fewest in the past four days, and four deaths, bringing the overall tally to 3,19,889 and the figure to 11,450.
In Maharashtra, the highest number of cases came from the Mumbai circle, including the MMR, with 1,364 cases, followed by the Akola circle which reported 1,154 cases. The Nagpur region was third, contributing 946 cases. Among civic corporations, Nagpur and Amravati reported 643 and 555 cases, almost as many as Mumbai.
