Maharashtra: As Covid-19 Cases Rise, Government Warns Of Shutdown If People Ignore Guidelines

As Covid-19 cases begin to rise in Maharashtra again, a concerned state government has warned of a shutdown.

The Covid-19 pandemic had been brought under control in Maharashtra thanks to the restraint and discipline of citizens, Prime Minister Uddhav Thackeray said on Sunday, but also warned that if people do not follow security measures, it could trigger a second wave. . “Like a tsunami.”

The warning came as Maharashtra recorded more than 5,000 cases for the fifth day in a row, bringing the tally to 1,780,208, with 5,753 new infections on Sunday. Almost 20% of the cases recorded on Sunday came from Mumbai alone, where 1,135 new infections were recorded.

The state had registered fewer than 5,000 cases for nine days in a row through November 17, with a daily average of 3,628 cases.

Thackeray said that Maharashtra was at a crossroads in its fight against the coronavirus disease (Covid-19) and warned people that there could be another lockdown if proper behavior was not followed.

“Delhi, Ahmedabad and some Western countries have again seen an increase in cases … We are now at a crossroads. Today, the numbers are down in Maharashtra. We have to decide which path we want to take. Do we want to follow the path of confinement? We need to take control of our actions right now. The vaccine will arrive when it arrives, but for now, masks, social distancing and disinfection are the only drugs to prevent coronavirus, ”Thackeray said.

Health experts and the state administration expect a second wave to hit Maharashtra in late December. The next eight to ten days are crucial in determining how big the increase could be.

The prime minister, in his address to the state, said that some had advised him to impose a night curfew as in Ahmedabad, Gujarat. “Some people are suggesting that there should be a night curfew. But not everything can be done by enacting laws. We do not ban firecrackers for Diwali and instead ask people to exercise caution. And they continued. In the same way, I ask that you do not venture out of your homes unnecessarily, ”he said.
