NEW DELHI: As the trends come from the polls, the BJP is emerging as the largest party in the state, but Congress cannot repeat its 27-seat performance in 2015 and the Mahagathbandhan is behind the NDA.
Congressional leaders say that while it is early to comment on the outcome of the counting trends, the BJP is more comfortable in the seats contested by Congress. In addition, the RJD despite being popular, could not get popular votes according to trends until 12 noon.
Congressional leaders feel that although the party contested 70 seats, they were difficult contests as the BJP had a strong presence in these seats. The RJD granted those seats that were urban seats or strong bastions of the BJP.
According to trends, at 12 noon the BJP is shaping up to be the largest party with 73 seats. While the RJD leads with 57 seats, the JDU with 51 and Congress with 21 seats.
Bihar voted for the 243-member Assembly in three phases: October 28, November 3, and November 7.
The RJD had won 80 seats in the 2015 Assembly elections, while the JD (U) won 71 seats. The BJP had won 53 seats and the LJP won two seats.
Bihar’s election is being seen as a referendum on Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, whose JD (U) is in alliance with the BJP-led NDA. Nitish Kumar has ruled Bihar three times in a row since 2005.
