MUMBAI: Days after the Maharashtra cabinet recommended that he propose the appointment of Prime Minister Uddhav Thackeray to the Legislative Council, Governor BS Koshyari asked the Indian Election Commission (ECI) on Thursday to declare elections for nine vacant seats of the upper house of the state legislature.
A statement by Raj Bhavan said Koshyari asked the ECI to declare elections to the nine vacant seats of the Maharashtra Legislative Council “as soon as possible.”
The governor asked the survey regulator to fill the nine vacant positions since April 24, in order to end the current uncertainty in the state.
In his letter, the Governor stated that the Center has announced many relaxation measures regarding the application of the blockade in the country.
“As such, elections for Council seats can be held with certain guidelines,” he said in the letter.
Since Uddhav Thackeray is not a member of any of the chambers of the State Legislature, he must be elected to the Council before May 27, 2020, according to the statement.
The Electoral Commission had withheld the electoral process for these nine seats due to the coronavirus crisis.
Thackeray assumed the office of prime minister on November 28, 2019. He must become a member of the House before May 28 when he completes six months in office. Otherwise, it will dismiss the Prime Minister.
The state cabinet recommended Thackeray’s nomination as one of the governor’s nominees on the Legislative Council on April 9.
