Singer and songwriter AR Rahman received a notice from the Madra High Court in connection with a case brought against him by the Income Tax Department. Rahman allegedly funneled an income of more than 3 million rupees through his charitable trust, the AR Rahman Foundation, to evade taxes.
According to TR Senthil Kumar, the chief counsel for the income tax department, the Oscar-winning music composer received an income of 3.47 million rupees in the 2011-12 financial year for composing exclusive ringtones for a company of telecommunications based in the UK. The contract ran for three years in which Rahman asked the company to make the payment directly to his charitable trust, the AR Rahman Foundation.
The Times of India report quoted the IT Department lawyer as saying: “Rahman should receive the income that is taxable. After due tax deduction, it can be transferred to the trust. But the same cannot be routed through the trust, as the income from the charitable trust is exempt under the Income Tax Law. “
