Madhya Pradesh Prime Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan on Friday condemned the deaths of 14 state migrant workers in a train accident in Maharashtra and announced financial aid of Rs 5 lakh to their families.
At least 14 migrant workers from Madhya Pradesh, who were sleeping on the train tracks, were hit by a freight train near the Karmad station in the Aurangabad district of Maharashtra in the early hours of Friday.
Two other workers were injured in the accident.
“I have spoken with the railway minister, Piyush Goyal, and demanded an investigation into the accident in addition to helping their families,” Chouhan said and announced compensation of Rs 5 lakh to the families of the deceased workers.
A team of officials will be sent to Aurangabad to care for the injured migrants and make arrangements for their treatment, he said.
“I am also in contact with Maharashtra’s chief minister, Uddhav Thackeray, to receive updates on treatment and other arrangements for them,” he said.
Migrant workers were walking on the train tracks to reach Bhusawal from Jalna, 40 km from Karmad, on their way to their villages in Madhya Pradesh. They fell asleep on the tracks due to exhaustion, an official said.
